3G still too soon for Australia

September 20, 2003

Optus Chief Executive Chris Anderson expressed Friday that Australia is not ready for the widespread introduction of 3G mobile phones.

Anderson said its 3G mobile phone trials are going "fine" and "we are well positioned to roll out a 3G network in Australia" although he could not specify the rollout schedule.

Despite the high penetration and popularity of mobile phones in Australia, Anderson believes that it is still not the right time for the new generation mobile services.

"But frankly at this stage we think that the market isn't ready for it."

Although Optus are not keen to co-operate with Vodafone to build a 3G network, as suggested by recent rumours, they did not rule out completely the idea.

"I think as we have said before we will look at any sensible proposal that is put to us but there's nothing particularly at the forefront of our mind at the moment," he said.

Rival operator 3 Australia launched Australia's first 3G video phone service in April, allowing users to take part in live video phone conferencing.
