Big 3G push in mid 2004 for Vodafone of Italy
September 22, 2003
Vodafone of Italy expects to start selling 3G mobile phones from 2004
according to the head of Vodafone Italia Vittorio Colao.
The launch process will be gradual at the beginning of the year with
a big push from the middle of 2004.
"There will be a launch on a slightly reduced scale at the start of 2004
and then halfway through the year there will be a bigger-style launch,"
Vittorio Colao told an Italian newspaper.
The company is expecting to distribute 3G phones late this year but on
a trial level. The supply of handsets would pick up by the first half
of next year, ready for the push just before the summer.
The CEO anticipates a total of 3 and 4 million 3G subscribers in Italy
next year.
Vodafone are currently rumoured to be trailing the Nokia 6650 and the
SonyEricsson Z1010 as well as Sanyo 3G handsets.
Only 3 Italia has launch a 3G network in Italy and has over 300,000 customers.
Rival Telecom Italia Mobile, biggest operator in Italy, expects to make
its 3G debut in 2004 after testing the service in the second half of 2003.
