3 Italy Gives Away Videophones - But Not Yet
September 25, 2003 - source: BWCS
In a continued effort to meet its year-end subscriber targets and prove
gloomy analyst forecasts wrong, Hutchison 3 Italy has come up with another
industry first - a prepaid videophone. From today, users will be able
to sign up for the new offering, dubbed Tua, and a free video-enabled
handset, which will be upgraded at regular intervals at no extra charge.
The phone may be free, but there is still a sign-up charge of Euro99
before users can take advantage of the offer, plus a minimum monthly usage
fee of Euro30. Voice calls cost 30 cents per minute (15 cents to other
3 phones), while videocalls to 3 phones are charged at 45 cents per minute.
A setup charge of 15 cents is added to all voice and videocalls. As a
special promotion, e-mails will be free until the end of November. Additional
Tua tariff plans are available for contract customers and those choosing
to purchase the handset outright (initially priced at Euro395 - Euro495,
depending on the model).
There is a tiny catch, however. Hutchison admits that delivery of handsets
will take several weeks. The success of its summer promotion, it claims,
has depleted stocks of 3 videophones, and the new models on order - the
NEC e616 and Motorola A835 - have yet to arrive in the shops. It remains
to be seen if the accompanying advertising campaign, valued at Euro40
million, will be enough to persuade potential customers to be patient.
