StarHub getting ready for 3G launch in Singapore

Singapore's second largest wireless operator, StarHub, said it will award a multi-million dollar 3G network equipment contract by late October and plans to launch a trial service early next year.

The company said it would spend over US$230million on constructing the initial phase of the 3G network, but did not specify the favourite among the contract bidders, which includes Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens.

StarHub said it would use its own money and would borrow US$316million to cover the building of its 3G network over the next three years.

StarHub's main rival SingTel launched a trial 3G service in major cities around the country earlier this month and awarded the $125million 3G contract to Ericsson.

StarHub was awarded a WCDMA 3G license on April 2001 for US$55.3million along with SingTel and MobileOne.
