Maxis to begin first stage of 3G trial in year end

Maxis Communication, Malaysia's second largest mobile network operator, is preparing two trial runs as it gets ready to launch next generation 3G services. Maxis head Jamaludin Ibrahim said the trials will be split into a technical trial and a small pilot trial with the former to be conducted towards the end of the year.

"The technical trial will be conducted at the end of this year. Basically, we are looking at technological feasibility, besides the physical and technical aspects," the Chief Executive said.

He when on to say that the small pilot trial will be carried out in the first quarter of 2004 when the service is expected to contain applications and contents.

Maxis shareholders feels there is a future for 3G in the country but wants the network to be implemented gradually.

"Their concern is (that) the company should remain healthy and not over-invest on 3G," said Jamaludin.
