Interoperability testing delays SonyEricsson's 3G Z1010
September 29, 2003
SonyEricsson has delayed the launch of its 3G mobile phone, the Z1010,
in Europe and Asia by a few weeks so it can continue interoperability
tests with mobile operators. The Z1010, SonyEricsson's first 3G phone,
was scheduled to launch before this Christmas.
"The initial plan was to introduce our first 3G phone, the Z1010, in
the fourth quarter of 2003 but because of very complex interoperability
tests with around 15 mobile phone operators, we've decided to push back
the launch date by a few weeks," said SonyEricsson spokesman Peter Bodor.
He said the company is more concerned about whether the product meets
customers' expectations rather than being the first to offer a 3G phone.
Bodor said SonyEricsson views video telephony as a key service for 3G
and a way for operators to differentiate themselves. "Video telephony
is a main feature of 3G phones," he said. "That features really shows
users why they need a high speed broadband handset."
The phone is an eagerly awaited handset and expects to surpass the capabilities
of current 3G handsets. As well as WCDMA, it also supports GSM and GPRS
communications.
Three UK, which had planned to offer the Z1010, had problems with video
calling between different manufacturer's handsets such as the Motorola
A920 and NEC handsets.
