Mobile phone operator Vodafone has delayed its launch of high speed next generation 3G wireless service. The delay is a further blow to the British operator as the service was expected to launch in 2002 when the company bought the license in 2001.
The successor to Sir Chris Gent, Arun Sarin, said the big push for the 3G service in Europe wouldn't come until September or October 2004. A 3G network will be operational in the UK by spring but will only be a low key launch.
Vodafone said its decision was based on a shortage of handsets and to guarantee its Vodafone live! data service works smoothly on the new network. So far, 3G handsets in parts of Europe and Japan has been described as chunky and has put customers from subscribing to 3G operators. Poor coverage and the lack of killer applications have failed to wow users.
Analysts say Vodafone has enjoyed reasonable success with the live! service and will try to make as much as possible before moving the service over to 3G, which is still a rather immature technology. Third generation technology has had much criticism in the past and has led to many operators to employ a wait and see policy until the market is ready.
