The first 3G call in Estonia was made in the EMT trial network
September 30, 2003
The first 3G call in Estonia was made in the EMT trial network. Opening
addresses were made by Meelis Atonen, the Minister of Economic Affairs
and Communications, and Peep Aaviksoo, EMT CEO.
"With the functioning of the 3G or third-generation mobile connection
in the trial network, the 3G commercial network will be in reach of the
Estonian mobile customers' hand," said EMT CEO Peep Aaviksoo. "There
are currently 9 operational 3G networks in the world with 1.35 million
customers, about 1000 times less than GSM has today. The speed and volume
of 3G data connection have been made from much stronger and better wood
than GSM. The great difference in the number of customers indicates the
impressive development potential for 3G."
Tốnu Grünberg, EMT R&D director, noted that the 3G commercial network
will be operational in Estonia the soonest after a year and half. "For
mobile connection, 3G means a similar development when picture was added
to radio and the TV set was created," he explained. "We may
not today have a clear idea which new options 3G will provide, but it
is certain that the interactivity of mobile connection will be enhanced
and the scope of multimedia will be considerably expanded. The value chain
of mobile connection will extend and there will be increasingly more so-called
content providers whose task will be, metaphorically speaking, to create
exciting programs for customers."
According to Tõnu Grünberg, EMT will most likely launch 3G service to
the retail market in the year 2005. "At this time we have the technological
readiness to offer high-quality 3G service," promised Grünberg. "The
new generation mobile connection also entails enthusiasm on the customers'
behalf-an interest in the phone with picture and concrete investments
or, in other words, the new 3G-enabled phone-therefore, we want do develop
along with customers the 3G field."
3G mobile connection enables high-speed data communication that, in turn,
allows forwarding moving images and video clips. In the EMT trial network,
the speed of data connection is 384 KB per second, being as powerful as
an average ADSL. As of now, the 3G trial network is operational at two
EMT main locations, 16 Valge St. and 60B Peterbury Rd.; the network equipment
is manufactured by Ericsson.
