Ericsson to release HSDPA in China
September 26, 2004
Ericsson has announced it will release an evolution upgrade to WCDMA in China that will make 3G mobile phone services faster and more robust.
A local press, CRI Online, reported the new technology, called HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), is four times faster than WCDMA network.
HSDPA is a packet-based data service in the WCDMA downlink with data transmission up to 8-10 Mbps over a 5MHz bandwidth in WCDMA downlink.
Ericsson CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg said the new upgrade will make mobile applications more efficient, including faster internet access and video/audio downloads.
Svanbery also said China will become Ericsson's biggest market in the next decade and a major user of HSDPA technology. China is expected to have more than 118 million 3G subscibers by 2008, he said.
At the current moment Japan's NTT DoCoMo is the only 3G mobile operator piloting the HSDPA service. The company plan to upgrade its 3G service by introducing HSDPA over its WCDMA network in early 2005.
