Nokia supply WCDMA 3G expansion to MTC-Vodafone

Nokia has been chosen to expand the 3G WCDMA radio-access network for MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain), with the help of Future Communications Company (FCC), Nokia's value-added reseller for networks in the Middle East. With this expansion MTC-Vodafone will be able to offer 3G services nationwide by the end of 2004.

In August 2003, MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) became the first operator in the Middle East to implement an EDGE/WCDMA network, using Nokia network equipment supplied by FCC. With this expansion, working with FCC, Nokia will supply the necessary infrastructure to rollout the 3G WCDMA across the Kingdom of Bahrain.

"MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) decided to continue working with FCC and Nokia because of their expertise in WCDMA technology. Following the successful roll-out of the first phase of our 3G network with Nokia, we are very pleased to extend this partnership into the second phase," says Mr. Khaled Al Farkh, Chief Operating Officer, MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain).

"The Middle East is an important and rapidly growing market for mobile communications and this network in Bahrain is a showpiece for the entire region, with MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) having made the first EDGE call in the Middle East during the second half 2003. We look forward to supporting them through FCC in this WCDMA 3G network expansion towards a successful and nation-wide 3G coverage" says Dr. Walid Moneimne, Senior Vice President, Networks, EMEA, Nokia.

Under the expansion agreement, FCC will deliver and implement a complete Nokia radio-access network, including WCDMA base stations, Radio Network Controllers and other network equipment, plus operational support services. FCC will carry out the network implementation and integration, supported by Nokia.
