3G manufacturers eyeing Hungary

September 28, 2004

Hungary's 3G license auction has attracted interests from top telecom equipment makers and software developers. The minister of telecommunications Kalman Kovacs said so far 10 companies have bought tender documents for the 3G license auction.

ZTE Communications, Qualcomm, NTT DoCoMo and Ericsson are among those who bought tender documents for the 3G license auction even though they are unlikely to bid in the auction. However, they will be looking for business opportunities with the winning 3G service provider.

ZTE is looking in the possibility of setting up a regional manufacturing and development center for Europe in Hungary while DoCoMo is interested in developing 3G software in Hungary, Kovacs said.

The 3G auction is expected to attract bids by the three current mobile service providers - T-Mobile, Pannon GSM and Vodafone. Kovacs declined to identify other potential bidders.

Companies wishing to take part in the auction have until November 2 to submit their bids.
