Danish carrier TDC Mobile has signed Nokia as its second source to supply a W-CDMA 3G radio-access network. The deal represents Nokia's first WCDMA 3G network win in Denmark, and deliveries will begin next month. TDC is due to launch its 3G service on 3rd October.
The Finnish giant will join Ericsson as TDC's main supplier of 3G kit. The Swedes were chosen to supply W-CDMA infrastructure just over two years ago. For its part, Nokia will supply implementation, project management and care and replacement services as well as the hardware itself.
TDC says its 3G services will first be available in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg. The operator also pointed out that it is planning to "significantly lower" the costs for wireless data users in a bid to boost usage on its networks. It will cut the prices of data transmission by half for its entire mobile network, including all 3G and GSM users. However, it will keep the price of voice and SMS the same for 3G network as it is for existing customers on the current systems.
Nokia is a long-time supplier to TDC Mobile, winning its first contract with the company in 1998; it supplies GSM radio network equipment and GPRS systems.
