FET offers 3.6 Mbps HSDPA trial service

September 18, 2006

Far EasTone Telecommunication is now offering 3.6 Mbps download speed on a trial basis by using HSDPA technology. Through Far EasTone's HSDPA network, downloading a 10MB (1minute) music video takes only 22 seconds, 1.8 times faster than with the 2M ADSL connections that most people have at home. Far EasTone plans to offer HSDPA data cards accompanied by a new "unlimited roaming plan" at the end of September. Customers will be able to use the high-speed service to enjoy a faster, trendier, and more convenient mobile entertainment lifestyle.

Jan Nilsson, President of Far EasTone, Taiwan's leading operator of mobile data services, says: "Mobile telecommunications technology changes rapidly, and new technology always pushes out old ones. Looking at the development of advanced mobile technology, from 2G, 2.5G, 3G and now 3.5G, everyone competes to provide faster transmission speeds and larger bandwidths. 3.5G HSDPA technology has already been introduced in Japan, Hong Kong, Korean, England, the U.S., and France, and wireless data cards and handsets that support HSDPA are available on the market. This will give HSDPA an edge as it expands in business and consumer markets. Far EasTone is pleased to be the first company in Taiwan to offer 3.6 Mbps HSDPA mobile technology and faster transmission speeds, allowing customers to enjoy on-the-go multimedia services and data transmission."

At the 2006 Taipei International Telecommunications Show held in the middle of July, Far EasTone demonstrated its HSDPA network in conjunction with a laptop computer equipped with an HSDPA data card. This was the first time the HSDPA network was publicly demonstrated in Taiwan, and the event attracted crowds of attendees, proving that there is a real need for high-speed mobile technology. The HSDPA 3.5G network allows downloads at 3.6 Mbps. If consumers use a laptop equipped with an HSDPA data card, they will enjoy transmission speeds that are faster than most of WiFi hotspots and 2M ADSL home connections; such service dramatically reduces download time and allows faster communication.

Far EasTone plans to release its Hua-Wei E220 HSDPA data card at the end of September. This data card has a USB interface and can be used with desktops, laptops, or a number of consumer devices. It supports WCDMA, EDGE, GPRS, and GSM network standards and allows data downloads at 3.6 Mbps and uploads at 384 Kbps. Each data card can be combined with 375 and 775 "unlimited rate plans", allowing customers to get online whenever they wish. In the future, Far EasTone will release a HSDPA handset that can be used with existing 3G multimedia rate plans or with new value-added services and promotional packages. Far EasTone will complete its deployment of the HSDPA 3.5G network in the Greater Taipei area by the end of this year.
