The Vienna 3G auction, which became one of the shortest and least lucrative in Europe with bids totalling just 832 million euros ($618m), finished in less than two days. All six bidders in the auction gained licences. These included two newcomers; Telefonica of Spain and Hutchison, the Hong Kong conglomerate. The four operators already in the Austrian market were Mobilcom Austria; Tele.ring, which is owned by Vodafone; Deutsche Telekom's max.mobil; and Connect Austria, which is owned by Tele Danmark, Norway's Telenor, Viag Interkom and Orange.

Thursday Nov 2 saw the Austrian 3G auction start. There are six licences on offer, and six groups in the running: Mobilkom, max.mobil, Telefonica, tele.ring, Connect Austria and Hutchison.
