On June 30, the Japanese government granted 3G licenses to three
carrier groups based on Beauty Contest. The groups immediately launched
manufacturing and constructing efforts for their 3G infrastructure.
NTT DoCoMo Group, Japan's leading cellular carrier, will launch
its 3G service based on W-CDMA in May 2001, earlier than any other
carrier in the world. J-Phone Group, also utilizing W-CDMA, is scheduled
to launch its service in December 2001. DDI Group will launch its
cdma2000-based 3G service in September 2002.
