Poland on Wednesday cancelled its third generation mobile phone tender and decided to grant licences to the three local operators who are Centertel, PolKontel and Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa PTC.

The operators will each pay E650m ($613m) for the licences, which combine both GSM and UMTS rights. E250m will be payable in 2001, and the remainder will be payed in installments over the next 18 years. A fourth UMTS licence will be granted in 2002.

Eastern Europe's first tender for third-generation mobile phone licences suffered another blow when just three companies entered bids for five Polish 3G concessions.
