The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore said
Monday it will decide whether to license frequencies for a fourth
license for third generation mobile phone services in April next year.
It expects to complete a review of current radio spectrum bands within
the next two years. An IDA spokeswoman said the reviews is continuing
on whether to issue another license by April 2002 for 3G. |

The three existing Singapore mobile network operators - SingTel,
M1 and StarHub - have been handed third-generation (3G) mobile licenses
by the Singapore government. Since there were only three applications
for 3G spectrum rights, an auction is now unnecessary. Each carrier
will be able to take up the frequencies at the reserve price of
S$100 million (US$55.28 million).

failed to meet Monday's deadline for an opening bid.

The four applicants for 3G mobile communications licences in Singapore
were approved Friday to bid in the rights auction, almost guaranteeing
their success.
With only four licences for sale, there will be no need for an
auction if the companies each opt for a different part of the spectrum.
Singapore's telecoms watchdog, the Infocomm Development Authority,
which confirmed the applicants, said it will announce within 48
hours of receiving the opening bids on April 9 if the auction is
to proceed.

Only four companies have applied to bid for the four 3G mobile
communications licences up for sale in Singapore.
Bids were not expected to exceed the already reduced minimum price
of 100 million Singapore dollars (56.8 million US), analysts said.
The only applicants to meet Monday's deadline were Hong Kong-based
Sunday Communications and the three Singapore telecom companies
Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), MobileOne and StarHub.
