ITU Telecom Asia 2002

last updated: December 15, 2002

The ITU Telecom Asia 2000 in Hong Kong attracted visitors from all over the world. The show features significant focus on third generation technologies ranging from handsets to networks.

Visitors were able to see the current 3G handsets on offer by the few operators that have launched 3G services. Handset makers - including Sanyo, Samsung, LG, and NEC - showcased their future handset releases and concept phones. The NEC e606, selected by Hutchison 3G UK, was one of the highlights of the event. It has a built-in dual camera and supports a range of graphic and media formats.

The DoCoMo stand drew huge crowds as they demonstrated limited FOMA services. They offered viewers the chance to try out the service and actually make voice and video calls within a small area inside the hall. Furthermore, pictures could be taken with the handset and sent via email to the another handset.

The Ericsson and Fujitsu offered a similar WCDMA network demonstration, allowing users also to test 3G handsets over a live network.

Other 3G operators such as KTF and SK Telecom also featured in the event, showcasing their 3G cdma2000 handsets and service on offer in South Korea.

The number of exhibitors was below that of 2 years ago, with only 320 exhibitors instead of 500. Visitor levels were also down.
